Trail Life: How to Build a Mountain Biking Community Locally

Riding solo has its place, but nothing accelerates your skills — or your enjoyment of the sport — like finding your local crew. Here's how to actually build that community instead of waiting for it to happen.

Finding Local Groups

  • Facebook groups and Strava clubs — nearly every trail system has an active local group posting ride meetups, trail condition reports, and event info.
  • Local bike shops — often run weekly or monthly shop rides open to all levels; genuinely one of the fastest ways to meet other riders.
  • IMBA chapters and regional trail associations — usually organize both social rides and trail maintenance days.

Why Group Rides Build Skill Faster

Riding with people slightly better than you is one of the fastest ways to improve — you pick up line choices, braking points, and body positioning just by watching and following. It also builds confidence on features you might not attempt solo, in a much lower-pressure way than watching a technique video alone.

Trail Advocacy: Giving Back

Trails don't maintain themselves, and access for mountain bikes is often the result of years of advocacy work by local volunteers. Showing up for even one trail day a season — clearing brush, fixing erosion, building features — is how the sport sustains itself and how you meet the most dedicated (and usually most fun) people in the local scene.

Making It a Habit

  • Commit to one regular group ride per week or month rather than trying to attend everything.
  • Show up consistently — community forms through repetition, not a single big group ride.
  • Bring something back: share a good trail find, offer a spare tube to a rider in need, post trail conditions after your ride.

The trail is genuinely better with people on it. A good local crew turns "going for a ride" into the highlight of your week.
