Mountain Bike Maintenance Checklist: Pre-Ride and Post-Ride

A little maintenance discipline is the difference between a long, dirt-covered smile and a long walk back to the car. Here's a checklist you can actually stick to.

The Pre-Ride ABC Check (Takes 2 Minutes)

A — Air: Squeeze both tires. Check they're at your usual pressure (too low invites pinch flats and rim damage on rocks; too high kills traction).

B — Brakes: Squeeze each lever. They should engage firmly with no mushiness or grinding. Spin each wheel and confirm the pads aren't rubbing.

C — Chain/Crank: Spin the pedals backward. The chain should move smoothly through the derailleur with no skipping, and there should be no obvious rust or dry, gritty sound.

Bonus check: quick-release skewers or thru-axles tight, seatpost clamp secure, handlebar not loose in the stem.

Post-Ride Cleaning (5-10 Minutes)

  • Rinse the frame and drivetrain with low-pressure water — avoid pointing a hose directly at bearings (hubs, bottom bracket, headset).
  • Wipe the chain with a rag to remove grit before it works its way into the links.
  • Once dry, re-lubricate the chain lightly — too much lube just attracts more dirt.

Weekly / Monthly Deeper Maintenance

  • Weekly (if riding often): Check chain for wear with a chain checker tool; inspect tires for cuts or embedded debris; check brake pad thickness.
  • Monthly: Clean and re-grease the drivetrain thoroughly; check suspension air pressure/sag; inspect bolts for torque (especially stem, seatpost, and disc rotor bolts).

Signs You Need a Shop Tune-Up

  • Brakes that squeal or feel spongy even after bleeding attempts
  • Gears that skip or hesitate even after a derailleur adjustment
  • Any creaking from the bottom bracket or headset that doesn't resolve with a quick grease
  • Suspension that feels blown out or won't hold air

A 30-second pre-ride check and a quick post-ride rinse prevent 90% of trailside mechanicals. The rest just takes a standing appointment with your local shop every season.
